Chapter 43 Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation Sample Questions

1. MJ, a 28 year old regular female customer approaches you at the pharmacy counter looking very happy. She and her husband have decided to get pregnant. She has already scheduled an appointment with an OB-gyne however, she wants to know valuable information from a pharmacist standpoint especially with the use of medications. The critical period of teratogenicity in pregnancy that you should warn MJ about is:
  1. A. Last trimester
  2. B. Second trimester
  3. C. Last month
  4. D. 2nd to 8th week
Answer
Ans: D
Tips: RxTx/CTC 2019. Drug Use during Pregnancy. The embryonic period, from 18–60 days after conception, is when the basic steps in organogenesis occur. This is the period of maximum sensitivity to teratogenicity since tissues are differentiating rapidly and damage becomes irreparable. Exposure to teratogenic agents during this period has the greatest likelihood of causing a structural anomaly. The pattern of anomalies produced depends on which systems are differentiating at the time of teratogenic exposure.
