Question 1:
A pharmacist receives a prescription for amoxicillin suspension 500 mg TID for 10 days for an 11-year-old child. The pharmacist needs to prepare the suspension so that 500 mg is delivered in each 5 mL. The amoxicillin is supplied as a 250 mg/5 mL suspension, which, when reconstituted with 106 mL of water, produces 150 mL of 250 mg/5 mL suspension. Using two bottles of 250 mg/5 mL powder, how much water should be added to reconstitute the suspension to a final concentration of 500 mg/5 mL?

A. 56 mL
B. 62 mL
C. 106 mL
D. 150 mL

ANSWER

Answer: B. 62 mLn

Step 1: Total Drug in One Bottle; 250 mg/5 mL of 150 mL
5 mL…………………….250 mg
150 mL…………………. X mg
X mg =(150 𝑚𝐿 𝑥 250 𝑚𝑔)/(5 𝑚𝐿) = 7,500 mg
Total Drug for Two Bottles = 7,500 mg × 2 = 15,000 mg

Step 2: Determine the Volume of Dry Powder
Each bottle contributes a dry powder volume. If adding 106 mL of water produces 150 mL of suspension:
Dry Powder Volume (per bottle) = 150 mL − 106 mL= 44 mL

For two bottles
Total Dry Powder Volume = 44mL × 2 = 88 mL

Step 3: Calculate the Water to Add
To achieve the final volume of 150 mL with two bottles
Water to Add = Final Volume − Dry Powder Volume.
Water to Add = 150 mL − 88 mL= 62 mL.
